Willem de Kooning graduation catalogue. Concept and design. Together with Ruiter Janssen and Joany Anthonio.
Joany Antonio, Ruiter Janssen and I were asked to design the Willem de Kooning graduation catalogue of our year. Since we all have a fascination for information design, we decided to created an enormous infographic of what the work of this year's graduates is about.
We asked them to rate their work based on 16 keywords. For example 'humoristic', 'idealistic', 'experimental', 'systematic'. From these ratings, our script generated an infographic for each student. All keywords have a set position within the grid. The shape of the keyword depends on the rating; a big circle means a 10, a small cross means a 1. A dot means 0.
From this we created a larger infographic per department. It reveals the differences and similarities between them. Illustration students tend to make word that has much 'humor' and 'narrative' in it. Interior architecture students find it important to make 'practical solutions'. Both of the departments make 'experimental' work.
Finally we created an enormous overview that represents the work of the entire academy. It consists of 4752 shapes. And it shows that the graduates of the Willem de Kooning Academy '09/'10 overall create highly narrative, experimental and idealistic work.
